Welcome to the Monkey Puzzle video gallery! These pieces represent three years worth of video from the family archives. Most of the footage is of the shows we've developed, or from the other creative experiences we've had together as a tribe. Our video library is vast and full of bounty. We've had our portion, so now we'd like to share some of it with you. There's plenty of room, so come on over and cozy up to the burn barrel as we journey through the world of the Monkey.
We'd would like to recognize the artistic contributions of our peeps in the wider Portland community who collaborate with us on our vision and keep us inspired. Many thanks...

our magic is a surgery, closing open wounds....there is something about monkeys in black, and there are moments that go way beyond mere words, and niether music or video can capture or express... our circle was one of them... we then processed to the temple burn in silence. |

March 18th, 2007
The largest demostration in the country for the fourth year anniversary of the Iraq war was held right here in Little Beruit. 15,000 people gathered downtown to make public statements and voice their opinions. Among the marching throng was a small procession of Monkeys dressed in funeral clothes. It's amazing how loud a message can be even when you aren't saying a word. video

Journey 2006 -In the months leading up to the summer of 2006, the Puzzle worked furiously to redefine its mission. Ever evolving, the little tribe of Monkey’s toiled diligently in the lab, plotting their next coup to heroically capture the hearts and imagination of the world. It’s become clear that the chemistry of dome mischief, burn barrel magic and a few chattering sexy chimps has tremendous potential to produce a powerful or even explosive intoxicant… The July 2006: Monkey Odyssey show - and execution of its 4th Burning Man theme camp a few weeks later – were equally classic demonstrations of the esprit de corps for which the tribe has come to be known. Using those experiences as a backdrop, this unprecedented documentary film offers a brief peek at the inner workings of the Monkey Puzzle tribe and exposes a few of the tricks they’ve mastered on how to inspire community through the artwork that is their lives. |

 what time is it?
December 31st, 2006
Threshold n. - The point where a new era or experience begins.
The seeds for what was to become Monkey Puzzle’s first New Year’s Eve event were planted in early October. True to form, the tribe harnessed some post-Burn momentum and began to plot their next venture with great enthusiasm. What started out as a simple plan to gather a small group of folks to celebrate the passing of an incredible year quickly turned into one of the largest and most elaborate productions the group has ever undertaken. Much time and thought was put into developing the accoutrements of the show – very little was overlooked. Music? Check. Lighting? Check. Monkeys? Check. Fortunately, the gamble paid off as over 1000 people showed up to see what the fuss was all about!
The video showcases the collaboration between some amazingly talented individuals in the Portland community who brought out their biggest guns for the countdown. And though the infamous Phoenix Fest burn barrel flew the coup at Threshold, its flight from Monkey Puzzle was considered to be a fitting end to an amazing year together and symbolic of the potential for grand experiences to rise from the ashes in 2007.

– Burning Man 2006
The shot list for the Monkey Puzzle BM 2006 video extravaganza
involved lots of people-oriented close-up shots. There’s been a strong
desire brewing to document some of these monkey creatures in their wild
natural habitat. Naturally, they warmed up to the camera quite nicely!
Much of the daytime footage was intentionally focused on capturing
interaction between the members of the camp and the visitors blowing
into the space from other regions of the Black Rock City community.
Besides enjoying a rather strong interpersonal dynamic connection, the
Monkeys took great pleasure hanging around their beautifully
constructed space. Which, quite frankly, was pretty sick...

There are moments on the Playa when you just have to follow your
instincts and roll on with your people. Most folks attending the
Burning Man wouldn’t know about the Thursday morning sunrise walk to
the Temple because the vast majority of them just got to sleep at
6:00AM. For those of us eager to tap into an other world spirituality
at the ‘ass crack of dawn’, the White Procession presents itself as a
suitable mechanism.
What an amazingly special experience to be there with those beautiful people that morning. It was hard not to feel like the camera was slightly invasive, but notice how peacefully disarmed everyone seems… |

Dance Your Assimov! I don’t care what anyone says, that’s a pretty
clever tag line for the Portland sci-fi event of 2006 – the year Monkey
Puzzle set its sights on doing its next fundraiser at a venue with
permits.
The old Mt. Tabor Theater, while dark and awkward, proved to be the
perfect backdrop for our trippy time traveling romp. While the dim and
sparse lighting was a sham for the cameras, the atmospheric quality of
the low light was actually pretty effective. The projectors worked
better and so did the light reflections off Mark Ricketts’ tension
fabric. Certainly the most intensely rehearsed of the Monkey Puzzle
performances, the original Odyssey theatrical number fell victim to a
skipping CD player - later replaced by one Solovox. Oh, well. Rab and
Ravicher rocked and so did the rest of our friends. At this point in
the game, completing the Odyssey makes it feel like somehow we’ve
arrived.
